What is Smash English?

Smash English is an Australian English practice site built around short, comic-styled quizzes. Every quiz is mapped to the Australian Curriculum (ACARA for Years 1-10, ACEEN for Years 11-12), and there is a separate ESL track for English-as-a-second-language learners. Students practise in bite-sized sets of 10 questions and earn points, coins, badges and awards as they go.

How do I get started?

Create an account with your email, choose your level, then start a quiz. That is it — no app to install, although you can add Smash English to your phone or tablet home screen if you want it to behave like an app.

What is a 'level' and why do I have to choose one?

Your level is the year band you practise in — for example Years 1-2, Years 3-4, Years 5-6, Years 7-8, Years 9-10, Years 11-12, or ESL. It decides which quizzes you see and who you are ranked against on the leaderboard, so a Year 3 student is never compared with a Year 10 student.

Can I change my level later?

Your level is locked in when you sign up so that scoring and rankings stay fair. If you are in the wrong band — for example your child has moved up a year — you can request a year-group change from your account, and site admins can move you.

What if I don't know which level to choose?

Take the free placement quiz. It is untimed, adapts to your answers, and finishes with a recommended starting year group emailed to you. There are two tracks — Primary (starting at Years 1-2) and High school (starting at Years 7-8) — and you get up to two attempts per email per track.

What does a free account give me?

A free account is free forever. You get one quiz per day so you can keep practising, but free accounts do not earn leaderboard points, streaks, badges, missions or awards, and they do not appear on the leaderboards. Those rewards are part of a paid membership.

Is there a trial?

Yes. New members get a 7-day free trial of the full membership, so you can see the whole system — unlimited quizzes in your year band, points, coins, streaks, badges and reports — before you are charged.

What does a paid membership cost and include?

Membership is $9.99 AUD per month or $99.99 AUD per year (two months free). It unlocks unlimited quizzes in your chosen year band plus the full rewards system: points, leaderboards, coins, hints, streaks, badges, missions, awards and progress reports. You can cancel at any time.

How does ESL access work?

ESL is a single subscription that unlocks every ESL quiz — there is no year-band gating inside the ESL track. ESL quizzes are grouped as Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.

How do I find the right quiz?

Go to Quizzes. Pick your year-band tab, then open a category and topic to see the quizzes inside. Each row shows the quiz's UQI code, its title, the curriculum reference in brackets, and a coloured dot for difficulty — Starting, Building or Challenging.

What are those codes next to each quiz?

The code before the title is the UQI — a unique quiz identifier made from the year band, a three-letter category code and a number. The code in brackets after the title is the Australian Curriculum reference (ACARA for Years 1-10, ACEEN for Years 11-12) so teachers and parents can see exactly what is being practised.

What happens when I take a quiz?

Each quiz is 10 questions. Depending on the quiz you may see multiple choice, word match or short answer questions, and comprehension quizzes keep the passage or image on screen while you answer. Some quizzes are timed based on their difficulty. At the end you get your score plus a full review of every question with the correct answer and a tick or cross.

Can I get a hint?

Yes. If you are stuck you can buy a hint for 5 coins. Using a hint forfeits the +10 perfect-score bonus for that attempt, but you still earn a point for every correct answer — and you can re-run the quiz later without hints to claim the bonus.

How is my score worked out?

Accepted Answer

You earn 1 point for every correct answer, plus a +10 bonus the first time you score a perfect 10/10 on a quiz. Replaying a quiz you have already perfected earns no further leaderboard points, so the board reflects new learning rather than grinding the same quiz.

What if I don't get 100%?

You will be told you can run the quiz again to chase a perfect score and the bonus that comes with it. Each quiz can be attempted up to 3 times per day, and the limit resets at midnight.

What are coins for?

Coins are a reward currency you collect in your wallet, separate from leaderboard points. You earn them from quizzes, streaks, badges and missions, and you spend them on hints, avatar frames and confetti congratulations for other Smashers. Spending coins never reduces your points.

What are missions, badges and awards?

Accepted Answer

Missions are short goals on your dashboard — a daily mission, streak mission, mastery mission, no-hint challenge and comeback mission — that pay coins when you finish them. Badges unlock for achievements like perfect scores and mastering a topic. Awards are trophies earned across the year-band tracks as you complete more of the curriculum.

How do leaderboards work?

You are ranked against Smashers in your own year group across weekly, monthly and all-time boards, with 'Near me' and 'Top 100' views. Full detail lives on the Leadership Board & Coins page.

Question 19

Can parents, teachers or tutors see progress?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A monthly report is emailed to your saved recipients on the 1st of each month, covering quizzes taken, accuracy, topics practised and missions completed. You can save up to 3 recipients with a relationship label, each recipient confirms by email, and they can opt out at any time.

Can I send a report right now?

Yes. The Report button at the top of your dashboard sends a snapshot of your recent activity to your saved recipients on demand — handy before a parent-teacher meeting or tutoring session.

Question 21

How do I change or cancel my subscription?

Accepted Answer

Open Manage subscription from your account. From there you can switch between the monthly and yearly plans, update your payment details, or cancel. Cancelling keeps your access until the end of the period you have already paid for, and your account reverts to the free-forever plan afterwards.
